![]() The song has, like many a great protest song, a very catchy and memorable sing-along chorus: If you were a kids in the 90’s raised in church…you probably came across these. Our ‘protest song’ workshop has latterly been rehearsing a new song, Si Kahn‘s They All Sang ‘Bread and Roses’, first recorded in 1990 by American folk singer and political activist Ronnie Gilbert (1926-2015), one of the original members of The Weavers. This is what I remember as a kid…the cheese factor is probably at 90% but they are still awesome. Lastly, to be sure to always kick it a bit old school…I had to include these. ‘Be Held: Lullabies for the Beloved’ by Christy Nockels They have multiple volumes, the one pictured below is my favourite. ‘Hidden in my Heart, a lullaby journey through Scripture.’ These are beautiful and I often play them during my quiet times. It was a time the Holy Spirit used to speak strength and peace into my tired mind as well. When I was a new mom sitting for hours in the rocker in our nursery, I so cherished that time to sing prayers over my babes. We pray over our kids dreams and that God would be Lord of their little minds. Before all of the Pandemic craziness put everything on hold at church, we taught our Kids Choir ‘Ask, Seek and Knock’ and they learned it in a week and loved singing it. We also enjoy ‘Can you believe it’ by Hillsong Kids. Dance party ready and jam packed with truth. ‘You can always come home’, made mommy cry. The 3 year olds favourites are ‘God made me’ and ‘Tractor, Tractor’. Not sure why it’s called Lullabies because there are plenty of toe tapping tunes. The two that we are listening to is Slug and Bugs: Underwhere? and Lullabies. It’s a mix of just fun quality songs and some with a biblical message. This one is for your crazies 6ish and under □ It’s called Slugs and Bugsby Andrew Peterson and Randall Goodgame. They have so many different albums each with different Biblical concepts like faith, courage, trust, Jesus etc. We have them playing in the background a lot, and we also use it for intentional scripture memorization. Seeds Family Worship puts out quality scripture filled tunes. This is another that I can’t categorize in an age category. It’s easy listening for parents as well…love, love, love. This is my favourite right now… I can’t really put this in an age category on it because its just so cute and has good quality music. My check marks are usually, scripture rich, theologically sound and non cheesy (I have to listen to it as well). Pray for discernment as you look for music for your family and yourself to listen to. It also teaches them that we use our voices to praise God and proclaim truth. This is an easy opportunity to get scripture and truth in their minds and hearts. Have dance parties and pull out some instruments. Play these songs while they are playing play doh, colouring, building legos, eating snack etc. Songs are a great way to incorporate this teaching into your home. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and you shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deut. “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. When I worked as an ECE we’d have two year olds barely able to speak memorizing whole verses of a song. When you put something to a tune, its sticks. ![]() Songs have such a huge purpose in the teaching and training of children. ![]() That was always the difficult task of Kids Ministry… finding songs that fit the kids we were working with that would stick but still plant seeds of truth. ![]() I have included a couple that won’t be too offensive for the ‘too cool for school’ 8 year olds in your life. My world is preschool city right now so that is mostly what you’ll find. I decided to compile some of what we have playing in our home right now during playtime, cooking and bedtime whatever. Even though they may be just words right now, someday when he is faced with a storm of life those words will remind him to look to Jesus. Songs of faith have played their part in shaping both of us, and it makes our hearts happy to see our 3 year old belt out ‘My Lighthouse’ by Rend Collective. It was part of my home and the farmers home growing up. ![]()
